The Red Devils went from the elation of a 3-2 comeback win against Manchester City at The Etihad earlier this month to the disappointment of losing to the Premier League’s worst team.
Manchester United slumped to a 1-0 defeat by 20th placed West Brom in the Premier League following Jay Rodriguez’s 73rd-minute winner at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils responded with a 2-0 win at Bournemouth in midweek but Chelsea FC could still mathematically overhaul Manchester United if Mourinho’s side went on a losing run.
The 20-time English champions are in second place and three points ahead of Liverpool FC after switching their focus to the FA Cup last weekend.
Manchester United are 11 points ahead of fifth-placed Chelsea FC with four games to play in the current campaign.
Mourinho isn’t taking a top-four finish for granted despite their commanding lead over the defending Premier League champions the top-four race.
“We want to try. With this result, we have to think about securing the top four because we lost three points to Chelsea,” Mourinho told BBC Radio 5 Live.
Manchester United were 2-1 winners against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley to set up a final meeting with Chelsea FC.
The Red Devils finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last term but won the Europa League and the League Cup.
