The Red Devils were facing an embarrassing evening at the Etihad Stadium after goals from Vincent Kompany and Ilkay Gundogan secured a commanding half-time lead for Manchester City in the derby.
However, Jose Mourinho’s side denied Manchester City the chance to get their hands on the Premier League title thanks to Paul Pogba’s quick-fire double in the second half.
England international Chris Smalling got on the score sheet to net a dramatic winner and compound Manchester City to their second defeat of the Premier League campaign.
Manchester United are in second place in the Premier League table and four points ahead of Liverpool FC having played one game less than Jurgen Klopp’s side.
The Red Devils will take on Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley this month as Mourinho’s side look to end the season with some silverware.
Mata, who has been linked with a potential summer exit at Old Trafford, is hoping that Manchester United can win the FA Cup and wrap up second place.
“It’s fair to say that Manchester City will be the deserving winners of the Premier League; the amount of points they have won week after week just made things impossible for the rest of the teams,” Mata wrote on his personal blog.
“But this win takes us closer to the second spot, which is our goal right now, and gives us lots of energy for the last month of the competition.
“If we have a look at the calendar we can see that there are only five weeks remaining, and then the FA Cup final that we dream to play.”
Manchester United haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013.
