The Red Devils looked to be heading for a humuliating afternoon at The Etihad in Saturday’s late kick-off after Manchester City surged into a commanding 2-0 lead.
Belgium international Vincent Kompany broke the deadlock with a thunderous header before Ilkay Gundogan netted a classy second goal to put Manchester City in control.
However, Manchester United rallied in the second half and club record signing Paul Pogba scored twice to level the derby and threaten to run the Citizens’ title party.
England centre-half Chris Smalling netted the winner to secure a staggering 3-2 comeback win for Manchester United to make Manchester City wait another week to get their hands on the top-flight crown.
Mata reflected on Manchester United’s brilliant derby win in his latest update on his personal blog on Monday.
“The people you meet are talking about the game (especially if they are United supporters, of course), and almost every conversation is about last Saturday’s comeback,” Mata said.
“A derby is a derby. It may sound as a cliché, but it’s a special game.
“So when you get an away win after being 2-0 down against your rival, who is waiting for the final whistle to celebrate the Premier League title, you can expect people to talk about that for days.
“It happens in Manchester and in every other city where the fans are so passionate about football.”
Manchester United are in second place in the Premier League table but 13 points behind runaway leaders Manchester City.
The Red Devils haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson got his hands on his 13th top-flight crown.
Manchester United will take on Spurs in the FA Cup semi-finals later this month.
