Paul Pogba would be a key part of the Manchester United team if Sir Alex Ferguson was still in charge, according to Andrei Kanchelskis.

The France international is facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford after surprisingly falling out of favour under Jose Mourinho in recent months.

Pogba made a brilliant start to the 2017-18 season with two goals and two assists in their opening four Premier League games before he suffered a knee problem.

The 25-year-old has been criticised for his ineffective performances alongside summer signing Nemanja Matic in the middle of the park.

Pogba was dropped to the bench for both legs of Manchester United’s 2-1 loss to La Liga outfit Sevilla in the Champions League round of 16.

Mourinho’s ruthless treatment of Pogba has fuelled speculation that he could leave Manchester United at the end of the season.

Ferguson sold Pogba to Juventus from Manchester United in an £800,000 deal in 2012 after he failed to guarantee the Frenchman a chance to break into the first team.

Former Manchester United star Kanchelskis suggested that Ferguson would be able to get the best out of Pogba.

“I don’t know if Pogba will stay,” Kanchelskis told BetStars.

“He’s a good player, but is very inconsistent. Sometimes he plays well and other times he doesn’t play well at all. I don’t know if he will stay, it depends on which players Manchester United buy in the summer. They need to make changes ahead of next season.

“Pogba will need to play more next season, if he were playing under Sir Alex Ferguson he would definitely be playing more as they played more attacking football.”

Manchester United are in second place in the Premier League table and two points ahead of Liverpool FC.
