Paul Pogba is struggling at Manchester United due to a lack of freedom, Steve Nicol has claimed.

The France international has attracted criticism from his manager Jose Mourinho in recent months.

Indeed, the Red Devils boss has even omitted Pogba from his starting XI due to his ineffective performances.

The Manchester United record signing has been linked with a potential exit at Old Trafford at the end of the season.

Pogba produced a man of the match performance with a goal and an assist in France’s 3-1 win over Russia on Monday night.

The versatile midfielder’s display underlined his undoubted talent but doubts remained over his future.

Former Liverpool FC defender Nicol believes Mourinho is limiting Pogba’s ability with his current Manchester United tactics.

“The word is freedom. He is stepping on the field and the only thing he is thinking about is getting forward creating goals and scoring goals,” Nicol told ESPN FC.

“At Manchester United, he is thinking about where he has to be. Can he go or should he stay.

“All different questions going on his head. That’s not what we saw for France.”

Manchester United signed Pogba in an £89m deal from Serie A giants Juventus in the 2016 summer transfer window.

The France star won the Europa League and the League Cup in his first season back at Old Trafford.
