The French midfielder’s form has been a constant source of debate this season and he has been in and out of the starting line-up for the Red Devils in recent weeks.
However, Pogba went some way towards silencing a large portion of his critics on Saturday when he produced a stunning second-half display to help Manchester United fight back and beat Manchester City 3-2 at The Etihad.
The midfielder netted two second-half goals before Chris Smalling scored the winner for Jose Mourinho’s men to cap a brilliant comeback.
And Red Devils midfielder Matic, who has been settling into life at Old Trafford after having signed from Chelsea FC last summer, has talked up Pogba’s role in the team.
Speaking to MUTV, Matic said: “With his personality, Paul needs to be our main player because he plays in that position and he needs to take responsibility.
“Don’t forget that he has had an injury this season – he was out for three months and it’s not easy to come back after that.
“The people always expect a lot from you when you play for Man United – we know that this is normal. But he is still young and he can still improve. Today, he showed character and personality. If you saw him in the last 10 minutes, he was fighting a lot for the team and helping the team.”
Both Matic and Pogba will be hoping to feature for Manchester United when the Red Devils return to Premier League action on Sunday with a home clash against West Bromwich Albion.
The Red Devils are currently second in the table and they are aiming to finish as runners-up to Manchester City this term, while also winning the FA Cup.
