The Spanish midfielder is a firm favourite amongst Red Devils fans and he played a key role in helping Manchester United to book their place in the Champions League this season by winning the Europa League this term.
However, Herrera has found himself in and out of the first team at Old Trafford in recent months, with the Spaniard having struggled with injury of late.
He has been limited to just nine Premier League starts this season and his lack of first-team action has inevitably prompted speculation about his long-term future at Old Trafford.
Now, the midfielder has opened up about his situation at Manchester United playing under Mourinho.
Speaking to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Herrera said: “Mourinho backs you up if you give it your all and that’s how I understand football.
“Playing or not, this is a group and the group must win. In terms of personal treatment he is a direct and up-front person.
“He has no problems in telling you what he thinks. It never goes behind the back.”
Manchester United are still aiming to finish the season with a trophy when they take on Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley later this month.
The Red Devils are bound to be linked with a host of players in the coming weeks and months as the summer transfer window gives Mourinho the chance to bolster his squad ahead of next season.
