The Red Devils headed into the game on the back of their disappointing 1-0 loss to West Bromwich Albion in front of their home fans on Sunday as they handed Manchester City the title.
Manchester United bounced back on Wednesday though, as goals from Chris Smalling and Romelu Lukaku wrapped up the three points for Mourinho’s men.
The performance was a good warm-up for Manchester United’s crunch FA Cup semi-final clash against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on Saturday evening.
And the Red Devils manage seemed to be pleased by the response that he got from his players after the surprise defeat by West Brom at Old Trafford last weekend.
Speaking at his post-match news conference, Mourinho said: “Yes [I got the response I wanted]. The players were very good.
“I think a good team performance – professional, controlled, a good effort, good responsibility, desire to play, to have the ball, to score.
“Also desire to cope with the defensive responsibilities against a fast team and a team who is not easy to play against and part of that good collective performance was good individual performances.
“All of them were professional and responsible and with the first ambition which is to finish in the top four. I think one more point is probably enough, maximum two, so when we have that result, we can think about third and about second.”
Manchester United now switch their attentions towards their FA Cup semi-final clash against Spurs at Wembley on Saturday evening.
The Red Devils are aiming to finish in second place in the Premier League table and also secure the FA Cup trophy in Mourinho’s second season in charge at Old Trafford.
Should they beat Spurs, they will take on either Chelsea or Southampton in the final.
