Herrera helped the Red Devils to come from behind and seal an impressive 3-2 victory over Pep Guardiola’s men thanks to a stunning second half fightback at The Etihad.
The result delayed Manchester City’s Premier League title party and left Manchester United in second place in the table with six games left to play this season.
And Spanish midfielder Herrera seems to be confident that the Red Devils will be able to finish second this term as they look to build on their campaign next season.
Speaking to Manchester United’s website after Saturday’s game, Herrera said: “It was very important for our position in the league. We want to finish second and build a stronger Manchester United for next season. That’s all.
“Normally we should be fighting for the title with this amount of points. We want to finish as well as we possibly can this season.
“All the people in the newspapers, the journalists, have been talking about what this result means for the rivalry, the derby, our opponents. But we just think about Manchester United. That’s it, we don’t think about the others.”
Manchester United will now switch their attentions towards their Premier League home clash against West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils are also still bidding to try and win the FA Cup this season and they will take on Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-finals later this month.
Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season in Jose Mourinho’s first campaign in charge at Old Trafford.
