Nemanja Matic believes that Chris Smalling was the star of the show in Manchester United’s comeback win over Manchester City on Saturday.

The Red Devils defender scored the winning goal for Jose Mourinho’s men as they fought back from two goals down at half-time to claim the three points against their bitter local rivals at The Etihad.

Paul Pogba netted twice in the second half before Smalling volleyed home from close range to wrap up the three points for the Red Devils and put Manchester City’s title celebrations on hold.

And Matic, who joined Manchester United from Chelsea FC in the summer transfer window last year, reckons that Smalling was clearly the star of the show against Manchester City.

Speaking to MUTV, Matic simply said: “I think Chris Smalling was the main star.”

The Manchester United midfielder continued: “I think this is the best game for our fans because I know what this game means for them, especially when we knew that, if they [City] won this game, they would be champions and we didn’t allow them to celebrate in front of our supporters.

“I think it’s the most important [game] and for our supporters, it was the best way to show the pride and the best way to show how we fight for our club.”

The result left Manchester United in second place in the Premier League table as they bid to try and finish as runners up to Manchester City this season.

The Red Devils will return to top flight action on Sunday afternoon when they host West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford.

Manchester United will also look to try and win the FA Cup this season and will take on Tottenham in the semi-finals later this month.
