Jose Mourinho has talked up the importance of Manchester United finishing second in the Premier League table this season.

The Red Devils took a big step towards securing second spot behind Manchester City on Saturday when they sealed a 2-0 victory over Swansea City at Old Trafford in the top flight.

Manchester United are aiming to finish as runners-up to Manchester City this season as they bid to secure a spot in the Champions League for next season after their sixth-placed finish last term.

Manchester City can win the title next weekend by beating Mourinho’s men at The Etihad, but the Portuguese coach has urged his players to focus on trying to secure second spot in the Premier League this season and book their place in the group stage of the Champions League for next season.

Speaking at his post-match news conference on Saturday, Red Devils boss Mourinho said: “Overall seven matches to go, three very important points, we want to finish in the best possible position which is the second position.

“We are there for the whole season and clearly I think we deserve to finish there, but to finish there we need points and today those three points were important.”

Manchester United have not won the Premier League title since their famous final triumph under Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2013.

The Red Devils are still in with a chance of winning the FA Cup this season and will take on Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley in their semi-final clash later this month.
