Manchester United could beat Manchester City to the signing of Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk this summer, according to reports in the British media.

The Daily Mirror is reporting that the Red Devils are aiming to secure the signature of the 25-year-old midfielder as Jose Mourinho looks to bolster his squad this summer.

The same report says that the Red Devils have come in “strongly” for Fred this summer, but that they are facing competition from bitter local rivals Manchester City for his signature.

The story seems to suggest that Fred is definitely going to move to the Premier League this summer, and it is just his final destination that is to be confirmed.

Manchester City reportedly made enquiries about signing Fred in the January transfer window and the same article says that Fred is almost certain to move to England this summer.

The same story says that Shakhtar Donetsk value Fred at around £50m.

It also claims that Arsenal have expressed an interest in the midfielder but that the player looks more likely to move to Manchester.

Meanwhile, Manchester United will return to Premier League action this weekend when they take on West Brom at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
