Manchester United are moving closer to a potential swoop to sign FC Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti, according to a report in Italy.

Italian media website Calciomercato, as quoted by the Daily Mirror, is reporting that the Red Devils are edging nearer to a deal for the France international.

The same article states that Umtiti still hasn’t indicated to FC Barcelona what his future plans are after protracted contract negotiations.

FC Barcelona suffered a humiliating 3-0 loss to Serie A giants AS Roma in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday night.

The Italian club progressed on the away goals rule following a 4-1 loss at Camp Nou in the first leg.

Umtiti and Gerard Pique struggled to contain an inspired Edin Dzeko in the Champions League clash in the Italian capital.

So it is hardly surprising that Calciomercato are reporting that FC Barcelona have given Umtiti the green light to talk to other clubs.

According to the same story, Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is a big admirer of Umtiti as the Portuguese head coach looks to improve his defensive options at Old Trafford ahead of the new season.

Summer signing Victor Lindelof has struggled to make the step up to the Premier League since his £30m move from Benfica back in June.
