Manchester City are set to battle with Manchester United for the signature of Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara, according to reports in the British media.

The Daily Mail, as quoted by the Sun, is reporting that both Manchester clubs are keeping tabs on the 27-year-old ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to the same report, Manchester United have earmarked Thiago as one of their top transfer targets ahead of the summer window as Jose Mourinho looks to strengthen his squad ahead of next season.

However, the report also said that they are set to face “serious competition” from newly-crowned Premier League champions Manchester City for his signature.

The same article says that Pep Guardiola is aware that several of Manchester City’s midfielders are approaching the end of their careers – and he sees Thiago as the man to move to The Etihad.

Thiago has scored six goals and made one assist in all competitions for Bayern Munich so far this season.

Manchester United are likely to be on the lookout for a number of new signings this summer as Mourinho aims to assemble a team capable of winning the Premier League title next season.

The Red Devils handed the title to Manchester City on Sunday when they suffered a surprise 1-0 loss to West Bromwich Albion.
