Jose Mourinho shortlists two players to be new Man United captain
Jose Mourinho picks out David De Gea and Nemanja Matic as the top candidates to take over as Man United captain from next season, say reports
Jose Mourinho has decided that David De Gea and Nemanja Matic are the “outstanding candidates” to take over as Manchester United captain from next season, according to reports in the British media.
Metro is reporting that Mourinho has singled out the goalkeeper and the midfielder as the top choices to take the armband from Michael Carrick, who is hanging up his boots at the end of the season.
Carrick was named as Manchester United’s captain after Wayne Rooney left Old Trafford to re-join boyhood club Everton.
However, Antonio Valencia has taken the armband for most of the season due to Carrick’s lack of playing time.
Mourinho will now be considering which player he wants to hand the armband to from next season onwards, and the Portuguese coach has supposedly picked De Gea and Matic as the outstanding candidates.
According to the same report, Paul Pogba is not in the running to be appointed as captain, despite having taken the armband at times this season.
Meanwhile, Manchester United are currently preparing for their Premier League clash against Arsenal at The Emirates on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils are aiming to finish second in the Premier League and win the FA Cup this season, with Mourinho’s men set to take on Chelsea FC in the final at Wembley next month.
