The Gunners booked their place in the Europa League semi-finals on Thursday night thanks to a 5-3 victory over CSKA Moscow in the last eight.
Arsenal have been pitted against Atletico Madrid in the Europa League semi-final draw as Arsene Wenger’s side look to qualify for the Champions League by winning Europe’s second tier competition.
The Gunners have a dismal record on the road in the Premier League this season following a disappointing return of three goals in 15 away games this term.
Arsenal are in sixth place in the Premier League table and 13 points adrift of Liverpool FC and Tottenham Hotspur in top-four race.
Newcastle have won their last three Premier League games to hoist themselves clear of the relegation zone under experienced manager Rafael Benitez.
Former Arsenal star Merson is backing Newcastle to secure a point against the Europa League semi-finalists at St James’ Park on Sunday.
“Newcastle have been alright recently. They will give you chances but they will have a go while Arsenal will have had a long trip to Russia on Thursday,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“Arsenal have not been great but they have won games recently, so credit where it is due. After a load of hard fixtures they have had easy fixtures and they have put those teams to bed at home. You can’t ask for much more. They have done well considering they were up against it.”
Arsenal will have to get past Atletico to reach the Europa League and have a shot at securing a Champions League place for the 2018-19 season.
