Emmanuel Petit urges Arsenal to appoint 41-year-old as Arsene Wenger replacement
The Arsenal legend would love to see Patrick Vieira replace Arsene Wenger replacement
Emmanuel Petit believes Patrick Vieira would be a great appointment as Arsene Wenger’s replacement at Arsenal.
The Gunners manager has announced his intention to stand down at the end of the 2017-18 season.
Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 when Vieira captained the Gunners to top-flight glory.
The France legend is currently in charge of Major League Soccer outfit New York City FC following a coaching role at Manchester City.
The north London side have been linked with Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone and former Borussia Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel.
However, there has been talk of Arsenal turning to a former club legend such as Thierry Henry and Vieira.
Former Arsenal star Petit believes his old team-mate would be a great appointment for the record FA Cup winners.
“I’m a great friend of Patrick Vieira, so perhaps I am biased, but with everything he has done at Manchester City and New York City FC, and considering the way he is regarded by fans of Arsenal, I would be very happy if the club decided to appoint him as the next manager,” Petit told Paddy Power.
“I don’t know if that will happen, but I hope it does, for Patrick’s sake. I know he wants to come back to Europe to manage a team, and I guarantee that he loves Arsenal very much.”
Arsenal are in sixth place in the Premier League table and 14 points adrift of Tottenham Hotspur, who are in the final Champions League spot.
The Gunners can still qualify for the Champions League if Arsenal beat Atletico Madrid in the semi-final and go on to win the Europa League.
Arsenal will take on West Ham United at The Emirates in their first game since Wenger announced his departure at the end of the campaign.
