Robert Pires explains why Arsenal shouldn’t appoint Diego Simeone as next manager
The Arsenal legend believes the Gunners shouldn't appoint Diego Simeone as their next manager
Robert Pires believes Arsenal shouldn’t appoint Diego Simeone as Arsene Wenger’s replacement.
The Gunners head coach is set to stand down at the end of the current campaign following 22 seasons in charge of the north London side.
Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 and the Gunners are set to finish outside the top four in consecutive seasons.
The north London outfit haven’t reached the Champions League quarter-finals since 2010, while the Gunners lost 2-1 on aggregate to Simeone’s Atletico team to miss out on the chance to win a first European trophy under Wenger.
Simeone has long been touted as a potential replacement for Wenger given his success at los Rojiblancos following their La Liga title success in 2014.
Atletico manager has also lost two Champions League finals to Real Madrid but won the Europa League and Copa del Rey.
Former Arsenal star Pires believes Siemone’s style of football wouldn’t suit the Gunners.
“I don’t know if Diego Simeone would be the perfect fit for Arsenal,” Pires told BetStars.
“He’s a fantastic manager and he’s doing an amazing job at Atletico Madrid.
“He competes with Real Madrid and Barcelona every year and has reached the Champions League final, but his philosophy is maybe too defensive.
“Arsenal play fantastic attacking football and I think it’s important that the new manager continues with this philosophy.”
Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last term to miss out on a Champions League qualification spot for the first time under Wenger.
The Gunners have won the FA Cup in three of the past four seasons to ensure Wenger leaves Arsenal as the competition’s most successful manager.
