Martin Keown raves about 20-year-old Arsenal star
The Arsenal legend has been impressed with Gunners starlet Konstantinos Mavropanos
Martin Keown says he has been impressed with Arsenal youngster Konstantinos Mavropanos.
The Gunners signed the 20-year-old from Greek outfit PAS Giannina in the January transfer window despite his relative inexperience.
Mavropanos made his first Premier League appearance in a 2-1 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford last month.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger handed Mavropanos his home debut in a 5-0 win over Burnley at the Emirates Stadium last weekend.
The Gunners starlet started their penultimate Premier League fixture on Wednesday night but Arsenal lost 3-1 to Leicester City.
The January signing was sent off at the King Power Stadium to undermine his otherwise impressive start to the Premier League season.
Former Arsenal defender Keown lavished praise on Mavropanos for his outstanding start and urged the Greek defender not to be discouraged by his red card.
“I saw a real warmth from the Arsenal fans for a player who was showing fight,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“When you play this way, you have to make sure you do not go below the line. Ultimately, you have to stay on the pitch.
“Mavropanos is only 20. It is massive for him to break into the Arsenal first team at his age. I was a similar age when I was first sent off — for Arsenal at Manchester City in 1986.
“I played in an aggressive way from the start of my career and if you get it wrong, you are off. It is massive for Mavropanos that he has broken into the first team.”
Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 when the Gunners finished the campaign unbeaten.
The north London side also signed Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Manchester United star Henrikh Mkhitaryan in January.
