Martin Keown sends warning to next Arsenal manager
The Arsenal legend believes the next Gunners manager needs to tackle the defensive problems
Martin Keown has warned the next Arsenal manager that he will need to address their defensive weakness in the summer.
The Gunners are on the lookout for a new manager after Arsene Wenger confirmed that he will leave at the end of the season.
The north London side are in sixth place in the Premier League table following a disappointing campaign on the road this term.
Arsenal lost 2-1 to Atletico Madrid in the Europa League semi-finals to rule out the prospect of the Gunners winning their first trophy under Wenger.
The Gunners have conceded 49 times in 37 games this season, while Arsenal have lost 12 times on the road in the Premier League.
Former Arsenal star Keown has warned the next Gunners boss that he will need to improve the team’s defence next term.
“There is a contingent of young defenders at the club now, with Calum Chambers and Rob Holding,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“Arsenal have lost two central defenders with Per Mertesacker retiring and Laurent Koscielny out until December.
“The new manager needs to assess whether the young defenders are good enough and maintain a pathway for those who are. Arsenal need a top level central defender for one of these youngsters to play alongside.”
The Gunners have finished outside the top four in the past two seasons to miss out on Champions League football.
Arsenal have won the FA Cup seven times under Wenger, including three triumphs in the past five seasons at the French coach.
