Emmaneul Petit: Mesut Ozil is Arsenal’s best player when he turns up
The Arsenal legend delivers his honest verdict on Mesut Ozil
Emmanuel Petit has named Mesut Ozil as his favourite Arsenal player – when the German star decides to turn up.
The Arsenal star has attracted criticism over the past couple of seasons for his disinterested manner on the pitch.
Ozil was rumoued to be considering a move away from the Gunners with his contract running down to the final six months.
However, the Gunners made Ozil the best-paid player in their history after the World Cup winner put pen to paper on a £350,000-a-week contract.
The Germany international hasn’t justified his lavish contract so far given Arsenal’s continued regression in the Premier League.
Arsenal legend Martin Keown accused Ozil of crocodile tears following the Gunners’ exit from the Europa League after a 2-1 aggregate loss to Atletico Madrid.
Former Gunners midfielder Petit named Ozil as his favourite player but appeared to criticise the playmaker’s inconsistency.
“In the current Arsenal team… I have no idea… Ozil when he actually wants to be a player,” Petit is quoted as saying by Paddy Power.
Arsenal are in sixth spot in the Premier League table and set to finish outside the top four for the second successive season.
The Gunners lost 3-0 to Premier League champions Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley earlier this term.
The north London side haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04.
