Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang makes controversial comment about Arsenal under Arsene Wenger
The Arsenal striker reflects on Arsene Wenger's final seasons in charge of the north London side
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has claimed that Arsenal stagnated under Arsene Wenger in recent seasons.
The Gunners signed the Gabon international in a club record £56m deal from Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund in the January transfer window.
The African forward has proven a hit in the Premier League after he scored 10 goals in 13 games in the Premier League.
Arsenal finished in sixth place in the Premier League table and 12 points adrift of Liverpool FC, who finished in the final Champions League qualification spot.
The Gunners haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 and the north London side have finished outside the top four in the last two seasons.
Wenger’s men suffered a 2-1 aggregate loss to La Liga side Atletico Madrid in the Europa League semi-finals to miss out on the chance to earn a Champions League spot by winning the competition.
However, Aubameyang has delivered a withering verdict on Wenger’s latter seasons at Arsenal.
“It’s a little bit of a mixed feeling,” Aubameyang is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.
“Over the last few seasons – you have to tell the truth – the club has stagnated a little bit. I think everyone is actually a little bit excited to see what happens next season.”
The Gunners appointed Spanish head coach Unai Emery as their new manager last week.
Arsenal lost 3-0 to Premier League champions Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley back in February.
The north London side have won the FA Cup in three of the past five seasons.
