Arsene Wenger warned Arsenal star hasn’t improved since £35m move
The Arsenal legend claims Shkodran Mustafi hasn't improved since his move from Valencia in 2016
Shkodran Mustafi hasn’t improved since his £35m move to Arsenal from Valencia in 2016, according to Perry Groves.
The Germany international completed a switch to the Gunners from the Spanish side after earning a reputation as a composed defender in La Liga.
Mustafi made a promising start to his Arsenal career but the former Everton defender has struggled to maintain his consistency.
While the 26-year-old has struggled with some injury problems, Mustafi has allowed mistakes to gradually creep into his game.
The Arsenal defender has fallen out of favour with the Germany national team manager Joachim Low ahead of this summer’s World Cup in Russia.
Former Gunners defender Groves admitted that he is disappointed with Mustafi’s lack of progress at the north London club.
“Mustafi is making too many individual mistakes,” Groves told sportingbet.
“He looked decent when he first joined the club but he certainly hasn’t improved and I think that’s why he gets criticised from the fans.”
Arsenal signed Mustafi from Valencia to help improve their defensive options given Per Mertesacker’s persistent injury problems.
The Gunners have conceded 48 times in 36 games in the Premier League this season to raise serious questions about Wenger’s defence.
The Frenchman is set to stand down as Arsenal manager at the end of the campaign following a disappointing season for the Gunners.
Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 and haven’t reached the Champions League quarter-finals since 2010.
