Martin Keown sends patient message to Arsenal supporters about Unai Emery
The Arsenal legend wants the Gunners to be patient with new boss Unai Emery
Martin Keown has warned Arsenal supporters that Unai Emery won’t be able to transform the Gunners team overnight.
The north London side confirmed the appointment of Emery as their new manager on Wednesday following weeks of speculation.
The 46-year-old head coach will be tasked with reviving the Gunners after Arsenal were allowed to stagnate under Arsene Wenger in recent seasons.
The Gunners finished outside the top four in the last two seasons to miss out on Champions League football in the 2017-18 and 2018-19.
Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 and the Gunners haven’t launched a sustained challenge over the past decade or so.
Emery won the Ligue 1 title in his final season at Paris Saint-Germain after the cash-rich club finished ahead of AS Monaco and Lyon.
Former Arsenal defender Keown wants the Gunners to remain realistic in their expectations for Emery at the north London side.
“To expect that Emery will transform this team into champions overnight is unrealistic,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“Arsenal has been run Arsene Wenger’s way for 22 years and, given the sheer spending power of the Manchester clubs, the competition is fierce.
“Emery inherits a side that can do damage in the final third but lacks a steeliness and a nastiness, particularly away from home. If he can restore these ingredients, then Arsenal can at least challenge in the Premier League.”
Emery led Sevilla to three Europa League titles, including a 3-1 win against Liverpool FC in the final in Basel in 2016.
Arsenal lost 2-1 to La Liga side Atletico Madrid in the Europa League semi-final earlier this month to miss out on a potential spot in the Champions League.
