Ray Parlour sets out Arsenal’s targets under Unai Emery
The Arsenal legend believes Unai Emery's primary target should be leading the Gunners back into the Champions League
Ray Parlour believes Arsenal need to secure a return to the Champions League in Unai Emery’s first season in charge.
The Gunners have turned to the Spanish head coach after Arsene Wenger stood down as their head coach following 22 seasons in charge.
Arsenal are in need of an overhaul after the Gunners finished in sixth place in the Premier League table and 12 points behind Liverpool FC, who occupied the final Champions League spot.
Wenger has emptied the Gunners coffers in recent seasons, spending £56m on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund in January despite having spent £52m on Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette.
The Gunners conceded 54 goals in 38 games in the Premier League this season to raise serious questions about the Arsenal defence heading into the 2018-19 season.
Arsenal are reportedly set to hand Spanish head coach Emery around £50m for new signings in the 2018 summer transfer window.
Former Arsenal midfielder Parlour outlined Emery’s targets for his first season in charge of the north London club following his appointment last week.
“Top four is going to be important [for Arsenal],” Parlour told talkSPORT.
“They’ve got to get back into the Champions League, so, for me, top four will be a very successful season.”
Arsenal have won the FA Cup in three of the past five seasons but haven’t won the Premier League title in the past 17 seasons.
The Gunners were 1-0 winners against Huddersfield Town last weekend.
