Pundit sets out Arsenal targets under Unai Emery next season
Shaka Hislop believes Arsenal manager Unai Emery will need to guide the Gunners to a top-four finish
Unai Emery needs to guide Arsenal back into the Champions League next season, according to Shaka Hislop.
The Gunners confirmed Emery as their new manager on Wednesday afternoon following days of intense speculation.
Arsenal finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season to miss out on a Champions League spot for a second season.
The north London side fell short in the Europa League, too, following a 2-1 loss to La Liga giants Atletico Madrid earlier this month.
Arsenal will face a tough battle breaking back into the top four given competition from Manchester United, Liverpool, Spurs and Chelsea FC.
Emery has won one Ligue 1 title, three Europa League crowns as well as two domestic cups in France during his managerial career.
Former West Ham goalkeeper Hislop outlined Emery’s targets for his first season at the north London outfit.
“Despite his failure at PSG, I don’t think you can question his success at Valencia and Sevilla,” Hislop told ESPN FC.
“If he can bring that back. He got both of those clubs into the Champions League. If he can do that at Arsenal, he will be a huge success. You don’t have to go deep in the Champions League. I actually like this appointment.”
Arsenal have won the FA Cup in three of the past five seasons under Arsene Wenger but have undoubtedly regressed under the Frenchamn.
The Gunners haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 when Arsenal finished the season unbeaten.
