Arsenal have stepped up their pursuit of Mikel Arteta as one of four shortlisted candidates to take over from Arsene Wenger this summer, according to reports.
The Manchester Evening News is reporting that the Gunners are considering the Manchester City assistant boss as a genuine contender to take over from Wenger at The Emirates.
Arsenal are looking to appoint Wenger’s successor after the Frenchman confirmed that he will be standing down as Gunners boss at the end of the season, after almost 22 years in charge.
According to the same story, Arteta is on the shortlist of candidates along with Juventus boss Max Allegri and former FC Barcelona coach Luis Enrique, with Hoffenheim manager Julian Nagelsmann.
Arteta has been part of the Manchester City coaching staff this season and has helped the Citizens to win the Premier League title in style under Pep Guardiola.
Arsenal are expected to appoint their new manager before the start of the World Cup in Russia next month.
Meanwhile, the Gunners are currently preparing for their final Premier League game of the season on Sunday afternoon and a trip to Huddersfield Town in the top flight.
Arsenal are set to finish sixth and miss out on a top four finish for the second season running.
