Emmanuel Petit makes admission about new Arsenal boss Unai Emery
Emmanuel Petit wants to see whether Unai Emery will be able to get the best out of Mesut Ozil at Arsenal
Emmanuel Petit has admitted that he is intrigued to see whether Unai Emery will be able to get the best out of the likes of Mesut Ozil at Arsenal next season.
The Spaniard has been appointed as Arsenal’s new head coach after Arsene Wenger opted to call time on his 22-year Gunners career at the end of the season.
Emery has been tasked with steering the north London club back into the Champions League spots after the Gunners missed out on top four finishes in the last two seasons under Wenger.
The former Paris Saint-Germain coach will look to get the best out of Arsenal’s current squad while also looking to bring in some new signings this summer.
And Petit has admitted that he is intrigued to see whether Emery will be able to get the best out of his Arsenal players in the coming months.
Petit is quoted as saying by the Daily Express: “If he wishes to install a pressing game, he must convince the Arsenal players to make the requisite effort off the ball.
“Some of those players don’t seem concerned about what happens when they don’t have the ball.
“They don’t put in the effort, and leave defending to defenders – but defending properly needs the whole team to work. It will be a very difficult season once again if Emery can’t make them do so.
“I’m quite curious to see whether Mesut Ozil, for example, can be persuaded to press the opponents off the ball. I want to see that.”
Arsenal will be hoping to challenge for the Premier League title in the coming seasons, with the Gunners having not lifted the top flight trophy since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 campaign.
The Gunners did win the FA Cup in three of the last four seasons under Wenger, however.
