Graeme Souness believes that Konstantinos Mavropanos should have been the man of the match for his impressive display in Arsenal’s 2-1 loss to Manchester United on Sunday.

The 20-year-old made his full Premier League debut as he started in the heart of Arsenal’s defence against the Red Devils.

The Greek defender earned lots of praise for his performance at Old Trafford, despite the Gunners slipping to a disappointing defeat to Jose Mourinho’s men.

Mavropanos showed plenty of promise and Arsenal fans will be hoping to see more of the same in the coming seasons.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles was named as the man of the match for his brilliant display in midfield for Arsenal on Sunday, despite being on the losing side.

However, former Liverpool FC star Souness feels that Mavropanos would have been more deserving of the award following his strong performance.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Souness said: “I would have given him [Mavropanos] man of the match today personally.

“I thought he was a real rock. If that’s going to be his level of performance then he’d be a starter week in, week out. He was very impressive today.”

Arsenal will now switch their attentions back to Europa League affairs and their crunch clash against Atletico Madrid in Spain on Thursday night.

The two sides played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the semi-final tie at The Emirates last week, with Antoine Griezmann netting the crucial away goal for the visitors.
