Arsene Wenger accused of disrespecting Alexandre Lacazette at Arsenal
Charlie Nicholas delivers his verdict on Alexandre Lacazette's first season at Arsenal
Charlie Nicholas believes that Arsene Wenger “disrespected” Alexandre Lacazette by dropping him for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at Arsenal this season.
The French striker has been settling into life in London after having signed for the Gunners from Ligue 1 side Lyon in July last year.
Lacazette enjoyed a relatively strong debut campaign at Arsenal despite being ruled out for a few months in the middle of the season due to a knee injury.
The 26-year-old ended the campaign as Arsenal’s top scorer, netting 17 goals and making four assists for the north London side.
However, he faced increased competition for a starting spot at The Emirates following Arsenal’s signing of Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund in the January transfer window.
And former Arsenal man Nicholas believes that Lacazette was disrespected by Wenger after being replaced by Aubameyang.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Nicholas said: “I don’t think anybody has earned the tag of player of the year.
“I think a lack of respect was shown to Alexandre Lacazette by dropping him for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but they have proved they are better together.
“Mesut Ozil hasn’t had a great season but he has still been the best creative player, but I have to abstain as none of them deserve it.”
Arsenal are yet to confirm who their new manager will be after Wenger stood down at the end of the campaign after almost 22 years at the club.
The north London side are expected to announce their new boss shortly, before making a number of signings in the summer transfer window to get their squad ready for a title challenge next season.
