Arsene Wenger has defended Mesut Ozil after he was criticised for missing Arsenal’s clash with Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday.

Ozil was pictured in the stands at The Emirates as he sat out Wenger’s final home game in charge after picking up a back injury in the days before the clash.

There have been reports that some of his team-mates were upset about Ozil’s attitude after he sat out Sunday’s game.

However, Wenger has insisted that Ozil has been undergoing treatment on a back problem and he will almost definitely miss Wednesday night’s trip to Leicester City in the Premier League.

Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday morning ahead of the trip to Leicester, Wenger said: “Football players are not like that.

“I can understand that. He’s injured.

“He was in for treatment yesterday. He still has a back problem. It looks unlikely [he will play against Leicester].”

Ozil signed a new contract at Arsenal in February to make him the north London club’s highest paid player at around £350,000 a week.

Arsenal are yet to confirm which manager will be taking over at The Emirates when Wenger steps down at the end of the season.

The Gunners will have to settle for another campaign without Champions League football next term after they missed out on a top-four finish and were knocked out of the Europa League by Atletico Madrid.
