Alan Shearer names the signings Arsenal must make this summer
Alan Shearer feels that Arsenal need to make a number of big signings this summer if they want to challenge for the title
Alan Shearer believes that Arsenal need to make “five or six” quality signings in the summer if they want to challenge for the title next season.
The Gunners are likely to be linked with a host of stars in the coming weeks and months as the speculation about who will take over as the club’s new manager continues.
Arsene Wenger has announced that he will be stepping down at the end of the season after nearly 22 years in charge at the north London side.
Arsenal have struggled to maintain Premier League title challenges in recent seasons and they have not lifted the top flight trophy since their famous unbeaten triumph back in the 2003-04 campaign.
And England legend Shearer feels that the Gunners are likely to have to spend big this summer if they want to be able to mount a title challenge next term.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Shearer said: “It is a little worrying to read reports that the Gunners will have a transfer budget of only £50m this summer.
“I don’t know if that is true or not but, if those figures are accurate, it will not buy them an awful lot.
“If they want to start challenging for the title again they will need to sign five or six quality players and, individually and collectively, they will cost a heck of a lot more than that.”
Arsenal are currently preparing for their home clash against Burnley on Sunday afternoon as they look to try and finish as highly as possible in the table.
Wenger’s men are on course to miss out on a top four finish for the second season running, with the Gunners currently in sixth place in the table.
