Martin Keown urges next Arsenal manager to consider selling 24-year-old
Arsenal legend Martin Keown doesn't rate the club's Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka
Martin Keown has urged Arsenal to consider selling Granit Xhaka.
The Switzerland international has been unconvincing since his move to Arsenal in a £33m deal from Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach in the 2016 summer transfer window.
Xhaka arrived at the north London club with a big reputation following his impressive performances for Borussia Monchengladbach after the midfielder was given the responsibility of captain.
The 25-year-old has scored one goal and has made seven assists in 35 appearances in the Premier League despite Xhaka costing the Gunners a number of points in the current campaign.
Xhaka was at fault in Arsenal’s 2-1 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford last weekend to prompt further criticism of the Swiss midfielder.
Former Arsenal star Keown believes the Gunners should have already offloaded Xhaka following his poor performances.
“Granit Xhaka has made numerous mistakes and was poor again,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“There was a time when an Arsenal player could make one or, maybe, two errors and then he would be replaced.
“Maybe it was more ruthless in those days. Xhaka has played 35 Premier League games, more than anyone else at the club this season.”
Xhaka has scored seven times in 90 games in all competitions over the past two seasons since his arrival at Arsenal in a big-money deal.
The Gunners are in sixth spot in the Premier League table and won’t finish in the top for the second successive season.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will stand down at the end of the season following another disappointing campaign.
