Arsenal will lose out to Real Madrid in the race to sign Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez, according to a report in Spain.

Spanish media outlet Marca, as quoted by talkSPORT, is reporting that Arsenal are interested in a potential deal to sign the Uruguay international ahead of the World Cup.

The same article states that Champions League winners Real Madrid are also keeping tabs on the South American in the hope of tempting Gimenez across the Spanish capital.

According to the same story, the Arsenal scouts had identified Gimenez as a player capable of improving the Gunners’ leaky defence under new manager Unai Emery.

However, Marca claim that Real Madrid are ready to active his £53 million release clause in the 2018 summer transfer window.

Arsenal finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season to miss out on a Champions League football for the second successive season.

The Gunners lost 2-1 to Gimenez and Atletico Madrid in the Europa League semi-finals to miss out on a possible spot in the Champions League.

Arsene Wenger stood down as Arsenal manager at the end of the campaign after 22 seasons in charge of the north London side.
