The Gunners confirmed Emery as their new manager on Wednesday despite previously being linked with former Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta.
Emery comes with a wealth of experience following spells in charge of Almeria, Valencia, Sevilla, Spartak Moscow and Paris Saint-Germain.
The 46-year-old led PSG to the Ligue 1 title ahead of defending champions AS Monaco and Lyon in the 2017-18 French top flight campaign.
Arsenal star Granit Xhaka has failed to deliver in the middle of the park since his £33m move to the Gunners from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2016.
The north London side released Santi Cazorla last week to leave the Gunners short on quality options in the middle of the park.
However, Arsenal legend Keown believes Italy international Verratti could be the answer to the Gunners’ midfield conundrum.
“The fans want to see a team that can dig in, battle and scrap,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“Emery needs to bring in a player like Marco Verratti, who he managed at Paris Saint-Germain, to instil those qualities in midfield.”
Verratti worked under Emery for two seasons at PSG, winning the Ligue 1 title, two Coupe de la France and two Coupe de Ligue crowns.
Arsenal finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season to miss out on a Champions League spot for the second successive season.
