Martin Keown identifies where Arsenal need signings this summer
The Arsenal legend wants the Gunners to make defensive signings this summer
Martin Keown believes Unai Emery will have to prioritise improving the Arsenal defence in the summer transfer market.
The Gunners appointed Emery as their new manager last week after Arsene Wenger stood down at the end of the 2017-18 season.
The north London outfit finished in sixth place in the Premier League table this season to miss out on Champions League football.
Arsenal haven’t finished in the top four in the last two campaigns to underline their regression under Wenger in recent seasons.
The Gunners conceded 54 goals in 38 games in the Premier League in the most recent campaign to highlight their defensive problems.
Arsenal lost 2-1 to La Liga side Atletico Madrid in the Europa League semi-finals to end their hopes of winning the competition.
Former Gunners defender Keown believes Emery will need to improve the Arsenal defence ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
“He has to assess whether Arsenal’s central defenders are good enough for him,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“Laurent Koscielny is out for six months, Per Mertesacker has retired, Shkodran Mustafi has had a difficult season and he also has two young defenders in Rob Holding and Calum Chambers.”
Arsenal signed Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Manchester United midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the January transfer window.
