Arsenal set to make 29-year-old their first summer signing – report
Arsenal are set to sign Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Borussia Dortmund, say reports
Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Sokratis Papastathopoulos as their first summer recruit, according to reports.
Gianluca Di Marzio, as quoted by Metro, is reporting that the north London side are keen on a deal to land the 29-year-old defender this summer as they prepare for life after Arsene Wenger.
According to the same story, Arsenal’s transfer department has earmarked the defender as a top target this summer despite the Gunners currently being without a manager.
Arsenal’s defending has been heavily criticised in recent seasons and it would be no surprise to see the Gunners spend big on bolstering their rearguard options this summer.
Greece international Papastathopoulos is out of contract at Borussia Dortmund next summer, and talks over a new deal have reportedly broken down.
The same report says that a deal to bring Papastathopoulos to Arsenal is now very close to completion, and the Gunners are hoping to secure the signing of the defender for around £17m.
Arsenal ended up in sixth place in the Premier League this season as they once again missed out on a spot in the Champions League for next term.
The Gunners have not lifted the Premier League trophy since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 campaign.
