Robert Pires has urged Arsenal to sign Borussia Dortmund centre-half Sokratis Papastathopoulos in the summer transfer window to revamp the Gunners defence.

Arsenal suffered a 1-0 loss to Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday night to end their hopes of winning the competition following a 3-2 aggregate defeat.

The Gunners are in sixth place in the Premier League table and won’t finish in the top four for the second successive season to leave Arsenal supporters digesting the prospect of another camapign without Champions League football.

Arsenal have lost 10 of their 17 games on the road in the Premier League this season to undermine their excellent home form, while the Gunners have conceded 48 times in 35 games in the Premier League.

The Independent reported on Thursday that the north London side will target Papastathopoulos to improve their Arsenal defence ahead of the 2017-18 Premier League campaign.

Former Arsenal star Pires believes the Greece defender would be a good addition to the Gunners team.

“I think improving the defence must be a priority for the new manager and I think Sokratis Papastathopoulos would be a very good signing,” Pires told bwin.

“He’s been a consistent performer for Borussia Dortmund and I would like to see him lead the defensive line for Arsenal.”

Arsenal lost 3-0 to Premier League champions Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley back in February.

The Gunners haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04.

Wenger is set to stand down as Arsenal manager at the end of the season.
