Arsenal are confident of completing a deal to sign Switzerland defender Stephan Lichtsteiner on a free transfer, say reports
Arsenal are confident of completing a deal to sign Switzerland defender Stephan Lichtsteiner on a free transfer this summer, according to reports in the British media.
The Guardian, as quoted by Metro, is reporting that the Gunners are keen to tie up a deal for the veteran defender as Unai Emery looks to revamp his squad ahead of his first campaign in charge at The Emirates.
The defender made two assists in 28 Serie A appearances for Juventus last season but he is now available on a free transfer – and the Gunners are said to be keen on snapping him up.
The same story says talks are already under way to bring Lichtsteiner, who can play centrally and on the right, to The Emirates this summer.
The article says that Sokratis Papastathopoulos is Arsenal’s top defensive target this summer, but Lichtsteiner is also said to be wanted by the north London club.
Arsenal are bound to be linked with a host of players in the coming weeks and months as the north London side look to build a team capable of challenging for the title next season.
The Gunners ended up sixth in the table and without a trophy in Arsene Wenger’s final campaign in charge.
