Robert Pires tips Thomas Lemar for summer transfer but doubts Arsenal deal
The Arsenal legend believes Thomas Lemar will leave AS Monaco in the summer but rubbishes a potential deal involving the Gunners
Robert Pires has played down the chances of Arsenal signing AS Monaco star Thomas Lemar this summer.
The France international has been regularly linked with a move to the north London club over the past 12 months or so.
The Gunners were thought to be interested in a potential deal to sign Lemar last summer and were reported to have offered £92m on transfer deadline day.
However, speculation suggested that Lemar turned down Arsenal in favour of a potential move to Liverpool FC in the future.
Both Arsenal and Liverpool FC were touted as contenders to sign Lemar in January but the 22-year-old remained at the Ligue 1 side.
Pires, though, believes Lemar will be on the move in the summer transfer window with the World Cup set to act a shop window for top clubs.
But the Arsenal legend doesn’t believe Lemar will be heading to Arsenal given Arsene Wenger is set to leave at the end of the season.
“Thomas Lemar will leave Monaco after the World Cup this summer,” Pires told bwin. “I think he needs a new challenge and would love to experience a new country.
“Arsenal were of course interested last year but I don’t know if that’s still the case now that Arsene Wenger will no longer be manager. He would be suited to the Premier League.”
Arsenal lost 3-1 to Leicester City in the Premier League mid-week to suffer their 11th defeat of the season on the road in the Premier League.
Lemar has scored two goals and has made eight assists in 28 appearances in the Premier League this term.
