Arsenal urged to sign 29-year-old defender from Premier League rivals
Arsenal legend Perry Groves wants the Gunners to sign Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld this summer
Arsenal should sign Tottenham Hotspur contract rebel Toby Alderweireld this summer, according to Perry Groves.
The Belgium international is being widely tipped to leave the north London club at the end of the 2017-18 season.
Talks between Alderweireld and Tottenham have broken down amid talk of interest from Chelsea FC and Manchester United.
The 29-year-old has 18 months remaining on his current Spurs deal to open up the possibility of a potential exit this summer in a cut-price deal.
Alderweireld has established himself as one of the Premier League’s top defenders over the past two and a half seasons at White Hart Lane.
Arsenal have struggled with their defence this season after conceding 48 times in 36 games in the Premier League to leave them in sixth spot.
Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi have been particularly disappointing to prompt calls for Arsenal to reinforce their centre-half options at the end of the season.
Former Arsenal defender Groves believes the Gunners should look to sign the Belgian defender from their bitter rivals at the end of the campaign.
“Toby Alderweireld would be my dream signing for Arsenal this summer,” Groves told Sportingbet.
“I think he’s one of the best central defenders in the Premier League and I would love us to take advantage of his contract situation at Tottenham. It would be hilarious.”
Arsenal lost 3-0 to Premier League champions Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley earlier this season.
The Gunners drew 1-1 with Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final last week.
