Arsene Wenger gets Arsenal injury boost ahead of Atletico Madrid clash
Alex Iwobi hopes to be fit for Arsenal's trip to Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final clash on Thursday night
Alex Iwobi has declared himself fit for Arsenal’s trip to Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday night.
The Gunners are hoping to win Europe’s second tier competition to book a spot in the Champions League next term.
Arsenal were leading 1-0 in the first leg thanks to Alexandre Lacazette’s second-half goal at the Emirates Stadium.
However, Arsene Wenger’s side failed to see out the win despite having a man advantage after Antoine Griezmann netted a late equaliser.
Iwobi completed 90 minutes in Arsenal’s 2-1 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford last weekend despite having a hamstring problem.
The Nigeria international has three full days to recover ahead of the north London side’s trip to the Spanish capital.
Speaking to Sky Sports about his current injury status, Iwobi insisted that he will be fit to face Atletico in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final.
“I believe it is very good. I am still being assessed but to me it is good and I will be okay
“We will have to wait and see but I believe I will be okay and fit (for Atletico).”
The Gunners are in sixth spot in the Premier League table and set to miss out on a place in next season’s Champions League unless Arsenal can upset the odds and win the Europa League this term.
Arsenal signed Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Manchester United midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan last term.
