Jamie Redknapp states his prediction for Atletico Madrid v Arsenal
Jamie Redknapp looks ahead to Arsenal's trip to Atletico Madrid in the Europa League on Thursday night
Jamie Redknapp has warned Arsenal that it is going to take a “monumental” performance to beat Atletico Madrid and reach the Europa League final.
The Gunners were pegged back and held to a 1-1 draw by the Spanish side in the first leg of the Europa League semi-final clash on Thursday last week at The Emirates despite the visitors having been reduced to 10 men early on.
Antoine Griezmann netted a crucial away goal for Diego Simeone’s men to hand the Spanish side the edge heading into the return leg this week.
Arsenal were beaten 2-1 by Manchester United in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Sunday as Arsene Wenger rested a number of key players ahead of the trip to Spain this week.
However, former Liverpool FC midfielder Redknapp has talked up the difficulty of the task which awaits Wenger’s men in the return leg.
Speaking to Sky Sports on Sunday, Redknapp said: “It’s going to take a monumental performance, probably one of the greatest Arsene Wenger performances in all his years.
“They’re going to a cauldron where they don’t concede goals. It’s a tough place to play, they’ve got that away goal but Arsenal deserved better in that game.
“It was a good performance on Thursday night. They’re going to have to dig in and be hard to beat.”
With Arsenal currently in sixth place in the Premier League table, the north London side’s last remaining hope of qualifying for next season’s Champions League is to win the Europa League this term.
The north London side are yet to confirm who they will be appointing as Wenger’s successor ahead of next season.
