Paul Scholes raves about Antonio Conte after Chelsea FC’s 1-0 win over Man United
The Man United legend heaps praise on Antonio Conte after their 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the FA Cup final at Wembley
Paul Scholes believes Antonio Conte deserves credit for masterminding their 1-0 win against Manchester United in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils were the slight favourites to win the FA Cup final given Manchester United finished in runners up spot and 11 points ahead of sixth-placed Chelsea FC.
Manchester United were 2-1 winners against Chelsea FC in their most recent meeting in the Premier League, although the Blues had eased to a 1-0 victory over Jose Mourinho’s side at Stamford Bridge back in autumn.
Eden Hazard produced the moment of the final when he managed to escape Phil Jones’ attentions before the Manchester United defender brought down the Chelsea FC star inside the penalty area.
The Red Devils were unable to unlock Chelsea FC’s resilient defence at Wembley to leave Manchester United with no silverware this season under Mourinho.
Former Manchester United midfielder Scholes felt Conte deserved credit for managing to thwart Mourinho and his opponents’ strengths.
“It didn’t happen for Man United but you have to give Antonio Conte credit. His team sat really deep and that surprised me,” Scholes told BT Sport.
“I thought Chelsea would be the team in possession and Man United would play on the counter-attack, but Conte knows that United’s biggest threat is their pace in forward areas. There was nowhere for Sanchez and Rashford to run, and you have to say that United were very slow in possession.”
Manchester United haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson won his 13th and final Champions League crown.
Chelsea FC have won the Premier League title in two of the past four seasons.
