Paul Merson believes Alvaro Morata deserves another season to prove himself at Chelsea FC.

The west London side signed the Spain international in a club record £60m deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid after the centre-forward impressed at los Blancos and Juventus.

Morata hit the ground running with nine goals in his opening games to seemingly quash any suggestion that he would be unable to make the adjustment to the Premier League.

However, the 24-year-old’s goals soon dried up to prompt some pundits to criticise Chelsea FC’s decision to offload Diego Costa given his important role in their title successes in 2015 and 2017.

Morata has rediscovered some resemblance of his early-season form in recent months and the summer signing has 11 times in 29 games in his debut campaign in the Premier League under Antonio Conte.

Some reports have suggested that Chelsea FC could offload Morata at the end of the season amid interest from his former employers Juventus.

While Merson hasn’t been convinced with some of Chelsea FC’s signings this season, the Arsenal legend wants Morata to get another season to prove himself.

“I do like Morata. I would give him another year,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“He hadn’t played a lot of football until he came to Chelsea. So I would let him have a year to settle in.

“I didn’t really understand the Drinkwater one. Bakayoko was a lot of money for someone who isn’t as good as Loftus-Cheek. I’d take Loftus Cheek over him.”

Morata has won La Liga and Serie A title as well as the Champions League two times during an illustrious career so far.
