Pat Nevin: What really me impressed me about Chelsea FC star marked Mohamed Salah
The Chelsea FC legend opens up about Antonio Rudiger's performance up against Mo Salah
Pat Nevin hailed Antonio Rudiger as a brilliant man marker after the Chelsea FC defender thwarted Mohamed Salah in their 1-0 win over Liverpool FC on Sunday.
The Germany international moved to Chelsea FC in a £34m deal from Serie A giants AS Roma in the 2017 summer transfer window.
The Blues signed Rudiger to reinforce their defence following John Terry’s move to Championship side Aston Villa last summer.
The 25-year-old has scored two goals and has made one assist in 24 appearances in the Premier League this season.
Rudiger has forged an understanding with Cesar Azpilicueta, Gary Cahill and Andreas Christensen in the current campaign.
The German defender managed to keep PFA player of the year Mohamed Salah under wraps during Chelsea FC’s 1-0 win over Liverpool FC.
Former Chelsea FC winger Nevin raved about Rudiger after his performance in Sunday’s 1-0 win over their top-four rivals.
“There was the added tactic of putting Antonio Rudiger almost man-to-man on Salah who has been brilliant all season,” Nevin wrote in his column on the club’s website about Chelsea FC’s win.
“As soon as I figured out this was the game plan I sat back and relaxed, Salah for all his genius was up against precisely the last person he would want to be facing. A superb defender who is quicker than our former striker and Antonio stuck to him like the proverbial limpet when he had the ball. Salah didn’t get past him once in the entire game and I’ll be honest, that didn’t surprise me one little bit, he is a brilliant man-marker.”
Chelsea FC won the Premier League title last season after the Blues finished seven points ahead of Tottenham Hotspur in the title race.
The Blues lost 2-1 to Arsenal in the FA Cup final at Wembley last season to miss out on a double in their current campaign.
