Paul Merson warns Chelsea FC about Antonio Conte future
The Arsenal legend talks up Chelsea FC boss Antonio Conte despite his uncertain future
Paul Merson has described Antonio Conte as a top manager amid continued speculation linking the Chelsea FC manager with a potential exit at the end of the season.
The Blues head coach has endured a difficult second campaign in charge of the west London side despite winning the Premier League title with two games to spare last term.
Chelsea FC finished seven points ahead of second-placed Tottenham Hotspur last season after Conte enjoyed great success with his revolutionary 3-4-3 formation.
However, the Blues finished the current campaign an astonishing 30 points behind Premier League champions Manchester City to raise questions about his future.
Chelsea FC lost 4-1 to Spanish giants FC Barcelona in the Champions League round of 16 to fail to make significant progress in the European competition.
The Italian head coach has also been unhappy with the west London side’s recruitment policy to fuel speculation that Conte will quit Chelsea FC this summer.
While Chelsea FC have been out of sorts in the 2017-18 season, former Arsenal star Merson was keen to emphasise that Conte is a top manager.
“Antonio Conte will want to sign off at Chelsea with a trophy, but win or lose it shouldn’t affect his legacy,” Merson told the Daily Star. “Let’s be honest, he won the league.
“He transformed the way they play and everyone started copying him. He’s one of the top managers in the world and he’ll walk into another job.”
Chelsea FC signed Everton star Ross Barkley, AS Roma defender Emerson Palmieri and Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud in the January transfer window.
