Paul Merson has warned Chelsea FC supporters that the Blues are a “million miles away” from challenging Manchester City for the Premier League title next season.

The west London side finished in fifth place in the Premier League table this season to miss out on a Champions League spot for the second time in three campaigns.

Chelsea FC finished a staggering 30 points behind Premier League champions Manchester City despite winning the title with two games to spare last term.

The Blues limped out of the Champions League in the round of 16 following a disappointing 4-1 loss to FC Barcelona.

Manager Antonio Conte has regularly spoken of his unhappiness at Chelsea FC’s transfers since the Blues won the Premier League title.

Former Arsenal star Merson believes Chelsea FC need a lot of work to have any shot at challenging Manchester City for the Premier League trophy next term.

“Chelsea are a million miles away,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“They aren’t catching Man City. They need someone to come in and turn it around.”

Chelsea FC have won the Premier League title in two of the past four seasons under Jose Mourinho and then Antonio Conte.

The Blues signed Everton star Ross Barkley, AS Roma defender Emerson Palmieri and Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud in the January transfer window.

Chelsea FC lost 3-0 to Newcastle United in their final Premier League game last weekend.
