Paul Merson tells Chelsea FC 22-year-old deserves chance ahead of Tiemoue Bakayoko
The Arsenal legend believes Ruben Loftus-Cheek deserves a chance in the Chelsea FC team
Paul Merson has questioned why Chelsea FC didn’t give Ruben Loftus-Cheek a chance ahead of Tiemoue Bakayoko in the Blues team.
The 2017 Premier League champions signed the France international in a £40m deal from Ligue 1 winners AS Monaco last summer.
Bakayoko’s arrival was followed by Chelsea FC’s surprise decision to sell Serbia international Nemanja Matic to Manchester United in a £40m deal.
The 23-year-old has struggled to adapt to Premier League football this term despite previously impressing in the Champions League and Ligue 1.
Bakayoko often looked off the pace and appeared to lack the technical ability to thrive in the English top flight despite his potential.
Chelsea FC brought in England international Danny Drinkwater from Leicester City in a £35m deal but the versatile midfielder has found his first-team opportunities limited.
Loftus-Cheek moved to Crystal Palace on loan from Chelsea FC at the start of the 2017-18 season.
The 22-year-old has scored two goals and has made three assists in 24 appearances in the Premier League this term.
Former Arsenal star Merson believes Loftus-Cheek merits a chance in the Chelsea FC team following his impressive form on loan at Crystal Palace.
“I didn’t really understand the Drinkwater one,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“Bakayoko was a lot of money for someone who isn’t as good as Loftus cheek. I’d take Loftus Cheek over him.”
Chelsea FC have won the Premier League title in two of the past three seasons.
