Mark Lawrenson names Man United’s key player ahead of Chelsea FC final
Mark Lawrenson claims Manchester United's hopes of winning the FA Cup lie with Alexis Sanchez at Wembley
Mark Lawrenson believes Alexis Sanchez will hold the key to Manchester United’s hopes of winning the FA Cup on Saturday.
The Red Devils will take on their bitter rivals Chelsea FC in the FA Cup showpiece at Wembley as both Premier League clubs look to end mixed seasons on a positive note.
Manchester United finished in second place in the Premier League table but ended up 19 points behind champions Manchester City in a one-sided title race.
Jose Mourinho is looking to win his third major trophy in two seasons but the Portuguese head coach will have to get past his foe Antonio Conte and his ex-club Chelsea FC.
The Blues ended up in sixth spot and 30 points adrift of Manchester City despite winning the Premier League title with two games to spare in 2016-17.
Manchester United signed Sanchez in the January transfer window in an attempt to bridge the gap between themselves and Pep Guardiola’s side.
However, the Chile international has scored three goals and made three assists in 17 games in all competitions since his swap deal.
Sanchez scored in Manchester United’s 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur in the last four to book their place in the FA Cup final.
Former Liverpool FC defender Lawrenson believes Sanchez will be vital to Manchester United’s hopes of beating Chelsea FC.
“My fear is that the Belgian international will look a little bit leaden, so the key to United’s success could be Alexis Sanchez, who has improved of late,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.
“In the FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham he looked like the player we know he can be and United really need a repeat performance from him at Wembley.”
